Introduction to Understanding Systemic Racism - A Guide for Leaders & Manager
The issue of systemic racism in the workplace has received considerable attention over the past several years. Even in their most benign forms, unconscious biases within an organization can have profound impacts on Black, Indigenous and People of Colour by limiting their potential for growth and eroding their personal wellbeing.
In recognition of the need for greater awareness around this subject, BuildForce Canada has developed the Introduction to Understanding Systemic Racism e-learning course. Created with the input of an advisory committee composed of professionals from Black, Indigenous and People of Colour communities within the construction industry, the program is designed to help industry leaders and managers gain a better appreciation of the issues around systemic racism, and to furnish them with tools to recognize, mitigate and eliminate the influence of unconscious bias on decision making within their respective organizations.

NEW National Construction Safety Awareness
For everyone who works in construction.
This program has been developed by construction safety subject-matter experts to help workers - those who are new to the industry, and those looking to refresh their skill sets - to understand some of the fundamentals of working safely around the tools, equipment, vehicles, conditions, and situations that are common to most construction sites in Canada. The course provides an overview of safe-working practices for workers, while empowering learners to understand more about any requirements specific to their work sites, their employers, and their regional jurisdictions.
Understand what you can do to keep yourself, your co-workers, and the environment you work in safe every day.
- Know your rights and responsibilities on any work site, and those of your co-workers and your employer.
- Learn the necessary communications to ensure the work gets done properly and safely.
- Recognize the measures you need to takeoff the job site to make sure you’re ready for work on the job site.
- Identify the personal protective equipment you’ll use on the job site and how to use it effectively.
- Know the precautions to take when working with workplace chemicals, including understanding the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and safety data sheets.
- Understand the importance of protecting the environment around your work site, and how to make that happen.
- Recognize the different types of hazards you may encounter on a job site, and how to assess and control them.
- Identify the tools, equipment, and vehicles you’ll use on site, and how to use them safely.
- Know precautions to take when working at heights, excavating and trenching, and working near power lines.
- Understand how regulations differ across Canada and across industries, and the importance of understanding processes and procedures at your own site.
- Recognize hazards that may be present in confined spaces, and how to ensure you work safely under those conditions.
The National Construciton Safety Awareness course consists of about five hours of self-paced instruction, and is designed to equip workers with fundamental knowledge about safety in the construction sector. Note that the program is intended as a supplement to, and dos not replace study in, formal national and provincial/territorial certification programs.

This course is designed to familiarize workers with the unique safety requirements associated with working in the pipeline construction industry, from construction to inspection.

Project Accounting & Cost Control
Description: The Project Accounting and Cost Control course is designed for construction company owners, project managers, project coordinators, estimators, accountants and staff to develop an understanding of accounting processes as it relates to construction projects. Participants will learn how to design and read various construction financial reports and improve the financial systems of their construction company.
The course includes 7 video modules with 6 hours of expert instruciton and material.
Audience: Construction Owners, Project Managers, Project Coordinators, Estimators, Accountants and Staff.
At the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Understand the various types of contracts within the construction industry and the implications to the design of construction project financial management and stakeholder satisfaction.
- Understand the estimating process from bid to award to site mobilization.
- Be able to read and understand a General Summary Sheet of the bid and the steps to produce a Project Budget.
- Understand the various types of Change Order methods within construction contracts and the implications for Change Order reporting.
- Be able to link the site resources used for a change order to a Daily Extra Report and then to the accounting system.
- Be able to read financial statements: income statement, balance sheet, cashflow, job cost reports, and make decisions on a timely basis.
- Be able to forecast percentage of completion reports: projected income statements, job costing and cashflow to satisfy internal and external stakeholders such as banks and bonding companies.
- Understand and calculate various financial ratios used to understand financial reports and create company dashboards.
- Understand the holdback requirements of the Builder’s Lien Act and typical invoicing processes used at month end.
- Be able to calculate aged accounts payable and receivables separate from holdback amounts.
- Understand the importance of payroll reporting and being able to link this to the project schedule and labour productivity assumptions used by the estimating team.
- Understand the importance of procurement internal controls and the different methods used for recognition of revenue and expenses.
- Understand the normal close out processes and the reports expected for project budget vs. actual, deficiencies and warranties.
The course is eligible for 1 CCA Gold Seal education credit upon successful completion.
