Yesterday, Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy demonstrated Ontario’s continued commitment to support the development of Ontario’s pool of skilled workers through a variety of measures in his 2024 budget. We’re pleased to see: • An additional $100 million investment in 2024-25 through the Skills Development Fund Training Stream. • $16.5 million annually through the Skilled Trades Strategy to attract more young people and simplify the systems. • An investment of $62.9 million to expand the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program and launch pre-apprenticeship training. • Progress on a Target Benefit Framework to help workers plan for retirement. • An increase to the Construction Funding Subsidy to support development and re-development of long-term care homes. This will create good construction jobs across Ontario. "Skilled trades offer a rewarding career and are an integral part of Canada’s construction industry, however, we are facing a critical shortage of talent," said Line Porfon, OpenCircle CEO. "We firmly believe that by actively recruiting, training, and mentoring young people in the skilled trades, we can bolster Canada's pool of skilled tradespeople, who will then help build the economy of the future."
